Updated English Premier League Transfer Gossip

CHELSEA IN FOR MICKEY?
Very interesting line in The Sun this morning.

The most reliable journal on Fleet Street claims that Chelsea are all set to make a surprise bid for one Michael Owen, available at a knock-down price.

With the credit crunch biting even at the Bridge, Luiz Felipe Scolari has apparently been forced to look for cheaper options to beef up his squad, and with £25million for Luis Fabiano a little too steep, he appears to have turned his attention to Mickey.

Owen's contract runs out next summer, so he'll be available for a paltry £5million, although his £108,000-a-week wages might be a little too much even for Chelsea.

However, Big Phil might face competition from Spurs, who see Mickey as a cheaper alternative to Jermain Defoe.

CHELSEA WANT ROBINHO AGAIN?
Interesting stuff in The Independent this morn, which isn't a sentence that's written an awful lot.

They claim that Chelsea, having realised their mistake in the summer, are toying with making another bid for Robinho.

Apparently Big Phil has decided that Chelsea are lacking in attack, so will stump up the pots of cash required, which sort of goes against the idea that the pennies are being pinched at the Bridge.

Still, perhaps even more interestingly Chelsea could include a former Citeh boy in the deal. The Independent claims:

'If Chelsea receive any encouragement, from Robinho or from City, they may well pursue a deal and part of the discussions will be whether to include a player, such as Nicolas Anelka, a former City striker.'

BARCA WANT CESC
If The Gossip Column's hunch is right, the big story in The Daily Star this morn is a cheeky peek into the future. Next summer to be exact.

They claim that Barcelona, famously devoid of cultured midfield talent, are counting out the pennies in order to launch a £30million bid for one Cesc Fabregas.

Apparently the Catalans will do 'whatever it takes' to sign the midfielder, who as we all know started out as a callow youth at the Barca academy.

And look! They have that most reliable 'club source' to back up their claim:

"Barcelona know that he loves the club and they will do whatever they can to use the emotional ties he has with Barca to get him to return" the mysterious figure, possibly dressed in a trenchcoat and calling himself 'Deep Throat', said.

"It will take a lot of money, but he will be the No.1 priority."

SCRAP FOR AXEL
Another line in The Sun this morn, who claim that Alex Ferguson has joined Arsene Wenger in the chase for the gloriously named Standard Liege midfielder Axel Witsel.

Apparently the whipper snapper will cost around £15million, which is quite a leap given that the same paper claimed he would only set Arsenal back £6million.

Still, he'll be worth buying, if only for the slew of Beverly Hills Cop/Guns N Roses puns that will spew forth.

EVERTON BACK IN FOR MOUTINHO
Like a beaten trailer park wife, it looks like Everton are gluttons for punishment, going back to the ones that hurt them.

After their summer transfer plans were pretty much ruined by the fruitless chase for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Moutinho, it looks like they are about to try again.

The Daily Star reports that David Moyes is about to relaunch a bid for the 22-year-old, after several bids of around £12million were rejected in the summer, causing all kinds of hullabaloo.

AND THE REST...
Steve Bruce has told Hull to make him an offer for £5million-rated striker Marlon King...David James fears a Portsmouth player exodus...Andrew Cole is set to join old team-mate Paul Ince at Blackburn...Alan Pardew's bid to sign Bolton striker Heidar Helguson has been rejected...Andrea Dossena is fighting to save his Liverpool career - just 11 games after signing for £7m...Paul Ince has vowed to fight off any January bids for Roque Santa Cruz...Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson and Scunthorpe's Nigel Adkins have been added to the short-list of possible candidates to become the new Huddersfield manager...Leeds are poised to recruit Malcolm Christie from the football scrapheap...Michael Chopra, who has rejoined former club Cardiff on loan, could make the move permanent in January should Sunderland accept £2.5million...Darren Ferguson is emerging as the preferred candidate to take over as QPR manager...Hull have been given the green light to turn Marlon King's loan deal into a permanent £3million move...Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh wants to join Arsenal - or Tottenham.

Arsene Wenger & Sir Alex Ferguson analyse the game

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is confident victory over Manchester United will prove a significant performance in the development of his young team as they look to end the club's trophy drought.

From the starting XI who won Wenger's last trophy - the FA Cup in 2005 - only Cesc Fabregas was in the side that defeated United 2-1 in a gripping clash at the Emirates Stadium.

There were doubts whether Arsenal had the resolve for a Barclays Premier League challenge but Samir Nasri's double breathed life into their campaign after dropping points recently to rivals Tottenham and Stoke.

"It was a very important result because I imagined what would have happened if we lost," said Wenger, whose side overtook United in the table.

"Mathematically, it was key to stay with the top and show determination, spirit and mental attitude.

"I knew today that was a big game for the future of the team. To keep in the race, you need to win big games like that - and it is vital for a young team."

Wenger himself has been questioned by a small minority of fans, although his name was chanted during this victory.

"I can take criticism," the Frenchman added. "I am in a job where you have to take that. There is only one answer - with your performance on the pitch.

"I didn't doubt the spirit of my players. We made mistakes but I didn't question the spirit, quality or ability to play for the championship."

Nasri opened the scoring when his half-volley flew in off Gary Neville, then he added the second after Cesc Fabregas had found him in space on the edge of the area.

Fabregas told Sky Sports: "It has been frustrating, with the results we have had - and to win a game like that is vital, to get back on track, we were talking about it the other day.

"When you see the fans singing and enjoying themselves, this is the best we have had this season.

"But because we have beaten Manchester United, we are not better than we were last week - and last week we were not rubbish as everybody was saying."

Rafael da Silva came off the bench to score and set up a thrilling final six minutes of injury time - but Arsenal held on for the win they needed.

"We went out to win no matter what happens," Wenger said.

"It's a team answer - we showed that we have the squad, and that has been questioned. We showed that no matter who plays, we have the spirit."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson called it "fantasy football", while Wenger added: "It does not matter if you love Manchester United or love Arsenal. It was a game for people who just love football."

After the final whistle, skipper William Gallas was the last off the pitch as he celebrated with fans.

The skipper said: "It was really important for us to win against Manchester United, because we want to stay in the race - to do that we want to win every game.

"The last few games we have drawn and lost, so it was important to win at home."

Wenger felt Gallas was not the only leader he had,

"You need a shared leadership on the pitch - five or six on the pitch," he said. "We had 11 leaders on our side because everyone took initiative at the right time."

Ferguson admitted Manchester United's quest for a Premier League title hat-trick was dealt a major blow.

"It is a big blow to us," he said. "We needed to win the game.

"Our results against the other big clubs is a big concern. It is a complete opposite to last year, when we lost at Chelsea and drew at Arsenal but won the rest.

"We have got to get above 85 points to have a chance of winning the league, so we must keep going for it."

While the industry of his side's performance meant it could not be used as an excuse, Ferguson once again questioned how the fixtures have fallen for United.

In the first half of the season they must play the entire top eight from last term away from home, while every Champions League group game, such as last week's trip to Celtic, is followed by United getting on their travels in domestic combat.

"They say the league is not handicapped - I am not so sure," he said.

"Having every game away from home following a European tie is not easy. Going from Celtic on Wednesday to play at Arsenal the following Saturday lunchtime is hard, although funnily enough, I did not think it was a problem today."

Ferguson felt if Cristiano Ronaldo had pulled a goal back immediately after Nasri had bagged his second, the Red Devils would have gone on to win.

Similarly, Wayne Rooney had chances to put the visitors ahead before Nasri had opened his account.

With Arsenal's confidence flaky, United could well have taken advantage, although Ferguson felt the pressure being placed on Wenger worked in the hosts' favour.

"Arsenal were inspired by people saying they were out of the title race," said Ferguson.

"The crowd were right up for it and the players were ready for the challenge as well.

"There was all this talk about so many players being missing but apart from Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie, who might not have played anyway, it did not look like a massive injury list to me."

Ferguson calculated United had 21 attempts on goal, following up their 20 at Celtic Park. Yet on neither occasion did they come away with a win, with Rafael grabbing the consolation goal in north London.

"I don't know if anyone else can create as many chances as that away from home," he said.

"It was a fantastic game. We could have been four up before they scored.

"You hope to do better than that in big games but it will come. We are making chances, that is the main thing."

Barely Legal Arsenal make Wenger Proud

Yes, the young French national Samir Nasri who is barely legal to drink the USA has made his prescence felt at the Emirates Stadium. He did it with style and power.

The young Gunner scored twice and the second goal was one to watch over and over again.

Earlier this week Wenger did admit that Arsenal were facing low morale but never doubted their ability to beat anyone. With 9 first team players injured Arsenal managed to stun European Champions Manchester United.

Ronaldo, Rooney and Berbatov were simply as good as absent from the game. It were the Manchester United defence line up that deserve credit for not loosing so bad.

I loved the game and I am sure if you were there so would you.

ROBINHO: I CAN BE THE BEST AT CITY

Brazil striker Robinho believes he can become the "best player in the world" at Manchester City.

The 24-year-old, who moved to Eastlands on transfer deadline day from Real Madrid, has already lit up the Premier League with his flair and goals and is confident he is at the right club to realise his potential.

"I am going to be the best in the world," Robinho told Brazilian magazine Placar.

"I can do it at Manchester City. I want to be the best in the world, win the World Cup and return to Santos and win the Copa Libertadores.

"A lot of people believe that is harder here because of the team but I think it's easier as I am a regular starter. At Madrid I only started important matches.

"They (Madrid) might be the best club in the world but for me the best team is the one where you can play every game. It is no use to me being in a good side as a substitute."

Robinho added: "The welcome (at City) was great, excellent. They treated me as if I was (Diego) Maradona and that embarrassed me. I hope I can repay all that love on the field."

English Premier League Game Day Update (Saturday 8th Nov 2008)

Robbie Keane netted twice as Liverpool returned to the top of the Barclays Premier League after comfortably brushing aside West Brom 3-0.

Keane had only previously scored twice in the Champions League prior to his 12th league appearance for the club since his £20million move in the summer.

But Keane scored in the 34th and 43rd minutes while to secure the points while Alvaro Arbeloa blasted home another in stoppage-time as the Reds extended their unbeaten home record this year.

Meanwhile Arsene Wenger got the response he wanted as Arsenal bounced back from turmoil to defeat Manchester United 2-1, with Samir Nasri scoring twice at the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners boss Wenger admitted dressing-room morale was low after their draw with rivals Tottenham and defeat to Stoke - but this win breathes life into their campaign and lifts them above United in the Premier League table.

Wenger had Emmanuel Adebayor injured and Robin van Persie suspended. But Nasri provided the attacking threat, taking advantage of slack marking in each half to grab his fourth and fifth of the season.

Rafael da Silva, on as a substitute, volleyed home to give Sir Alex Ferguson's men hope - but there was no repeat of the memorable Spurs comeback.

Thomas Sorensen made a series of fine second-half saves to secure another valuable point for Stoke in a below-par goalless draw with Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

Sorensen pulled off a late double-save to deny both Amr Zaki and Antonio Valencia and also got down well to gather an effort from Emile Heskey.

Tony Pulis' men offered little in the attacking department besides a 55th-minute header from Ryan Shawcross which sailed into the arms of home goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Jermain Defoe handed Tony Adams his first win as Portsmouth boss as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Sunderland.

The England striker converted an injury-time penalty after Black Cats substitute El-Hadji Diouf had tripped Glen Johnson.

Algerian midfielder Nadir Belhadj had earlier cancelled out Djibril Cisse's fourth-minute opener six minutes after the break, but the home side wasted a series of opportunities to kill the game off.

Matthew Taylor inflicted a third successive defeat on Hull, but it was Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen who emerged his side's real hero in the 1-0 triumph at the KC Stadium.

For the first time since mid-April Bolton manager Gary Megson can reflect on back-to-back victories after Taylor's 50th-minute half volley was all that separated the sides.

However, such a feat would not have come about but for Jaaskelainen who produced a virtual one-man show for the remainder of the half to frustrate all connected with the Tigers.

Three goals in five minutes capped a sensational Everton fightback as they claimed a 3-1 victory against West Ham at Upton Park.

West Ham looked to be cruising to all three points when substitute Jack Collison scored on his home debut in the 53rd minute.

But an equaliser from Joleon Lescott in the 83rd minute was followed by a superb brace from Louis Saha in the 85th and 87th minutes to crown an amazing comeback by the Toffees.

English Premier League Transfer Gossip for November 3rd 2008

AVRAM AT POMPEY
Now this is what we call faith - according to the Daily Mirror, Portsmouth are already looking at Avram Grant as a replacement candidate if the Tony Adams experiment fails. Adams was appointed as the cheap option to replace Harry Redknapp but has started with two defeats.

Grant was Pompey's director of football and it says here that 'Gaydamak is ready to turn back to ex-Chelsea boss Grant if results dip and the riches that come with staying in the Premier League are in jeopardy.' Charming.

Some reports suggest that Adams - presumably oblivious to his precarious footing - will soon appoint Martin Keown as his assistant, but there are suggestions that Arsene Wenger will draft in Keown himself to toughen up his porous defence.

DELPH TO ARSENAL
Leeds will apparently sell their England Under-19 midfielder Fabian Delph to Arsenal in January - but only if they loan him back for the rest of the season to help them back to the Championship. According to the Daily Mirror, 'Leeds are resigned to losing Delph' but are not resigned to losing out on promotion, it seems.

DELAP A WANTED MAN
There are a few Premier League managers casting admiring glances at 'The Human Sling', with the Irish Independent suggesting that three clubs have made enquiries about his contractual status. Surprise, surprise that one of those clubs is said to be Bolton. Who would ever have thought that chief exponent of the Beautiful Game Gary Megson would be interested in a man who can chuck a ball 40 yards into what we believe Big Ron called 'The Mixer'.

BOLTON WANT A BODDE
Last week it was West Brom who were being linked with Swansea midfielder Ferrie Bodde in a £2.5m move in the Daily Mirror, but this week the price is back down to £2m - again in the Daily Mirror - and the suitors are Bolton. There's in no way just a 'picking names and numbers out of a hat' policy going on here.

AND THE REST
Blackburn are keen on Egyptian midfielder Hosny Abd-Rabbo but face competition from Strasbourg...Glenn Whelan, Richard Cresswell and Danny Pugh all want out of Stoke because they can't throw the ball a long way...Sam Allardyce has apparently rejected the QPR job...

English Premier League Transfer Gossip for November 4th 2008

SHAY TO SPURS? IT'S A GIVEN
Tottenham are expected to make a bid for Newcastle United goalkeeper Shay Given when the transfer window re-opens in January. A number of Wednesday's newspapers report that the Irishman will become the first purchase of new Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, with The Daily Mail claiming that 'The Newcastle goalkeeper is unhappy at the constant turmoil on Tyneside and is ready to make a move'.

Given has been at Newcasttle for 11 years and has played under eight managers in that time, so even Spurs must seem like a stable alternative.

HOFFMEISTER STAYING PUT
New Bundesliga club Hoffenheim have apparently told Bayern Munich (and most importantly Manchester United, for the purposes of this column) that in-form striker Vedad Ibisevic is not for sale. The 24-year-old Bosnia international has scored 13 goals already this season and United representatives have apparently watched him un action.

But Hoffenheim bankroller Dietmar Hopp has said: "I have not invested so much in my club to allow others to come along and start picking off our best players. All the players are under contract and are part of an exciting project. We don't need the money, and we won't be selling anyone."

WARNOCK TO CITEH (AGAIN)
For only about the 427th time, the Daily Mirror is reporting that Manchester City are lining up a bid for Blackburn's Stephen Warnock in January. But there's a new twist - City defender Nedum Onouha being used in a swap deal (how many swap deals actually happen?). They also mention that Mark Hughes is interested in Marseille's Nigerian left-back Taye Taiwo after realising that he has no decent left-backs at the club.

AND THE REST
Sunderland's sixth-choice striker Michael Chopra could be set for a loan spell at either Cardiff or QPR...Hermann Hreidarsson will leave Portsmouth and is wanted by old clubs Charlton and Ipswich as well as West Brom...Chesterfield striker Jamie Ward is a target for Sheffield United and Derby...The Rams' Miles Addison could be set to move to Stoke, presumably because he has really very powerful arms.

Cool Green Architecture of the Future

Designed by UCX architects, Urban Cactus is a housing project in Rotterdam. The design maximises the amount of sunlight each balcony gets and allows vegetation to flourish.

Architects RMJM say it promises to be "one of the most environmentally sustainable high rise buildings in the world". The Gazprom Tower in St. Petersburg will feature a two-layer glass outer wall that will supply it with natural ventilation, sunlight and thermal insulation during the fierce minus 30 degree Russian winters. It will also feature a large number of social spaces and green zones that will allow the workers to access leisure areas without wasting energy by using elevators for vertical transportation.

According to Beijing-based designers MAD Architects this superstar will be a completely self-sustaining city.

It will be capable of housing 15,000 people, growing its own food, recycling its waste and producing its own power. Reports suggest it will also be capable of travelling around the world and its first destination is planned to be the outskirts of Rome.

The never-ending quest to be the tallest building in the world may finally be over if this giant project ever gets off the ground.

Architect Eugene Tsui is planning the two-mile high Ultima Tower. Designed to withstand natural calamities the Tower is highly stable and aerodynamic. Rather than spreading horizontally the structure rises vertically from a base with a 7,000 foot diameter - inspired in part by the termite’s nest structures of Africa, the highest structure created by any living organism.

It will be its very own ecosystem with wind turbines and solar power to generate energy, electric cars and open garden balconies.

This will be the first high-rise to be approved in Paris since the lifting of a 30-year-old ban. By the time it is completed in 2014, Le Project Triangle will rise 200 metres from the Porte de Versailles and according to reports will cast virtually no shadow.

It is being built with renewable energy in mind, and its orientation will be optimised to take advantage of both solar and wind power.

This 2,810 metres-high mountain shelter, designed by the Department of Architecture at the Swiss Federal Technical University in Zurich (ETH), is 90% energy independent.

While sun may be melting the glaciers it is also providing the majority of this shelter's energy through photovoltaic panels and solar thermal systems. The designers are still said to be considering how to generate bio-gas from human waste in order to make it totally powered from alternative energy and even more self-sufficient.

Dubai's construction boom shows no immediate signs of flagging but at least there are some signs of more eco-friendly developments. The Jumeira Gardens complex will include this six tower construction. The developers say that the hanging garden canopy stretching between each set of structures will provide shade and cool the neighbourhood by as much as 10 degrees.

This is a home made out of prefabricated shipping containers and designed by DeMaria Design Associates.

It's made up of eight containers of varying size and bound together by conventional building materials. Doors and windows are cut through the walls, but beyond that no effort is made to conceal the industrial aesthetic of the containers.

Overall, it's a great use of recycled material that can mostly be built off site, considerably reducing construction waste.

They may look odd, but these hilltop pods act as important sources of geothermal power, bringing heat from deep beneath the ground up to the surface.
The pods are part of a wider vision from IwamotoScott Architects to turn San Francisco into a ecotopia by 2018. The concept also includes hover cars and fog catchers that harvest air moisture

While the sandbag house built in Cape Town, South Africa, is not an outstanding example of renewable energy or energy efficiency it is a great example of efficiency of resources. The total cost was just $6,000.

It uses inexpensive local materials, cutting down on transportation.

A system of building called EcoBeams replaces brick-and-mortar with sandbags. The system is reported to be just as strong as a brick system and uses less timber than traditional construction.

Currently pending construction in Singapore, the EDITT Tower, designed by TR Hamzah & Yeang, will be wrapped in green vegetation. In a city known for its downpours, the building will collect rain and waste water and use it to irrigate the plants. In addition, its solar panels will also provide 40% of the building's energy needs.

Imagine a circular loft with plenty of skylights and a solar array on top, gently rotating to orient itself towards the sun and you have an idea what the eco-friendly dome home is like.

A small mechanical structure in the base allows the home to rotate. The energy required for a 360 degree turn is roughly the same as vacuuming the house once. The benefit of rotation is to maximise the amount of sun absorbed by the solar panels on the roof.

The domes, made by Solaleya, are also very durable. They have been constructed using only Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood and proven to withstand category 5 hurricanes and earthquakes up to magnitude 8 on the MSK scale.
