Football365: Manchester City's January Transfer Shopping List under construction

Manchester City have revealed their search for top talent to Eastlands in the January transfer window is already well under way.

City are now one of the heavyweights in the football transfer market following the arrival of billionaire new owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, in August.

Backed by new found riches, boss Mark Hughes signed Robinho in a British record deal from Real Madrid on deadline day of the summer transfer window, while he also bid for Stuttgart striker Mario Gomez and Valencia star David Villa.

And Hughes' assistant manager Mark Bowen has now revealed that City, who have also been linked with Bayern Munich forward Lukas Podolski, already have their 'private detective' scouts working abroad in preparation for when the transfer window reopens in 2009.

"We have people out there looking at names already, we will be travelling Europe over the next few months," Bowen told City's official website.

"We also have the chance, because we know what the budget is, to target players at the very top so if you think you can get them maybe they will come."

Bowen, though, insists Hughes is determined to maintain harmony at City and is eager to secure a strong dressing room spirit.

"You can also do a lot of background work, a lot of our scouts might almost be like private detectives to see if a target might settle in with us," Bowen added.

"Are they likely to embrace what we do, not just on the pitch but on the training ground as well?

"The gaffer puts a lot of emphasis on training and if you are asking players to perform at the highest level of intensity, then bringing people in who just want to stand around at training counting the hours to Saturday might upset the balance as well.

"That homework has to be done. Possibly the hardest job will be careful selection of the players we bring in, but also moulding them into a team. We have to make sure that we have a team.

"You can't just point at the best players in the world, it does not work that way. You have to man-manage them and motivate them, you have to carefully select who you bring in and who they will work around."

Sky Sports:Calzaghe gives up WBO belt

Joe Calzaghe has given up his WBO super-middleweight title as he focuses on his November showdown with Roy Jones Jr.

The Welshman had held the belt for 11 years, defending it 21 times, just four short of the all-time record held by heavyweight Joe Louis.

However, the 36-year-old is now looking ahead to his move up to light-heavyweight at Madison Square Garden on November 8.

The move means it is unlikely Calzaghe will fight again at super-middleweight. Denis Inkin and Fulgencio Zuniga are set to battle it out for the vacant title this weekend.

Tough decision

"It was a tough decision to make, relinquishing the belt, I can tell you that without hesitation," Calzaghe said in his column in the South Wales Argus.

"It's just too hard to get down to the 12-stone super-middleweight limit."

He added: "The 10-year anniversary was a wonderful marker for me and I feel it's an appropriate time to end any doubt about me fighting at that weight again.

"I received my promoter's licence this week, Calzaghe Promotions is up and running and I feel like I am entering a new phase, not just in my career, but in my life.

"I had a great relationship with the WBO and although it was painful to give up the title, I know I have made the right decision."

Sky Sports: Thierry Henry thinking about future at Barcelona

Thierry Henry admits he may have to consider his Barcelona future in January, but insists it is down to him to adapt to playing on the left wing.

The French ace has struggled to recapture his best form since joining Barcelona from Arsenal over a year ago.

Henry has largely been played out of position and has also missed the club's last two Primera Liga games against Sporting Gijon and Real Betis.

He was linked with a move to Manchester United during the transfer window, but confirmed he wanted show loyalty to new coach Pep Guardiola.

However, the 31-year-old concedes he could review his situation at Camp Nou if he is not featuring prominently in Guardiola's plans.

Loyal

"I missed the match at Gijon because I was ill," Henry told L'Equipe. "I stayed in my bed for three days and I lost five kilos.

"At Gijon we won 6-1, so the coach played the same forwards in the next match. There is no trouble for me.

"Samuel Eto'o has had a great start to the season. I have no trouble with that, we need Sam. At Barcelona I am used on the left, I have to be better on the left, period.

"Did I think about leaving in the summer? At a certain time I asked myself the question, but after talking with the coach, I wanted to be loyal towards him.

"Leaving Barcelona in the winter? It is not topical at the moment, but if it carries on this way, of course we could talk about it.

"I have no regrets, I just want to play and have fun on the pitch.

"Do I have fun at Barcelona? It is very difficult, but once again it is up to me to adapt. Last season I was the top scorer at the club and I made 11 assists. Then people can say what they want."

Sky Sports: Manchester United boss hits out at wild tackles

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Bolton striker Kevin Davies deserves his tag as the top flight's dirtiest player.

The Trotters ace has committed the most fouls in the Premier League for the last two seasons, and caused fresh controversy last weekend for a fierce lunge on Arsenal's Gael Clichy.

Bolton boss Gary Megson leapt to the defence of his powerful front-man, insisting Davies is committed rather than malicious.

Ferguson believes his managerial counterpart is wrong to continuously back a man who is renowned for pushing the boundaries when it comes to whole-hearted tackles.

"Gary Megson came out and defended Kevin Davies," said the Unite chief.

"But it's hard to defend him when he makes tackles like he did last week."

Ferguson has previously slammed Davies for a crunching challenge on Red Devils full-back Patrice Evra during United's 1-0 defeat at the Reebok Stadium last season.

That duo are set to be reacquainted at Old Trafford on Saturday when the Trotters travel to Manchester and Ferguson is hoping there will be no repeat of the flashpoints which have marred recent meetings.

The Scot is concerned by the increase of dangerous tackles which have infiltrated the game of late, with United's Brazilian youngster Rodrigo Possebon on the receiving end of a wild hack from Middlesbrough's uncompromising centre-half Emmanuel Pogatetz during a Carling Cup contest in midweek.

"Tackling should be an art," added Ferguson.

"There's nothing wrong with good tackling. A few years ago I had Paul Parker, who was a fantastic tackler of the ball.

"That should not be lost to the game. But the issue referees have to deal with is the speed of tackling today.

"When players go charging in and there's a slight error of judgement, they can end up being bad tackles.

"We're delighted Possebon's injury is not more serious. At the time I feared the worst. It concerns you when you see the reaction from players after an incident like that."

Football365: Rooney says no to Liverpool

Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney has dismissed Liverpool's chances of challenging for the Premier League title.

The former Everton star has taunted Rafa Benitez's men by claiming they will struggle to finish in the top three.

Despite suffering defeat at Anfield with United earlier this month, Rooney feels Liverpool are still some way off challenging United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

"It will be hard for Liverpool to challenge the top three," Rooney told The Sun.

"Third will be an improvement for them.

"But I still think it will be ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal."

Football365: Hammers face £30 million fine over Tevez

A Football Association arbitration hearing has ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair, the Coca-Cola Championship club have confirmed.

The South Yorkshire club were relegated in a dramatic end to the 2006/07 season, when a Tevez-inspired Hammers beat Manchester United on the final day of the season to clinch top-flight safety at the Blades' expense.

The Premier League fined the Hammers a record £5.5million for fielding Tevez and Javier Mascherano when they were ineligible to play under league rules regarding third-party ownership.

United initially wanted to have their Premier League place reinstated and appealed that the monetary fine was insufficient.

Having failed in that regard they then turned their attentions to achieving a financial settlement.

And the club have issued a statement on their official website claiming success in that case, although the exact nature of the compensation is as yet unclear.

Newspaper reports suggest the Blades could be looking for a figure of around £30million, while chairman Kevin McCabe is on record as saying that relegation cost United at least £50million in lost revenues.

McCabe said: "I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling.

"The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour.

"The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process."

Intriguingly, the club statement also raises the question of a further intervention by the Premier League.

It read: "The Blades began their legal fight for reinstatement some 16 months which also included an arbitration hearing against the Premier League. This award could now pose a question as to what the Premier League will do."

A West Ham spokesperson told BBC Radio 4: "We need to digest the full findings of the arbitration panel and will consult our lawyers on the next steps we might take before making any further comment."

Tevez and Mascherano are both long gone from Upton Park, earning lucrative moves to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively, while Kia Joorabchian, whose MSI company were judged to have partially-owned the Argentinian pair, is now a transfer consultant with the Hammers.

He had originally taken legal action against the east London club, claiming he was owed £7.1million, but the parties agreed an out-of-court settlement earlier this year.

For their part, West Ham are now considering whether or not to appeal against this latest ruling through the Court of Arbitration for Sport, although that decision may hinge on the level of compensation that is fixed when the arbitration panel meets again to determine a figure.

Like Sheffield United, West Ham signalled their intent to withdraw from the debate while they consult legal representatives, adding: "It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

Football365: Revealed: THE ARSENAL PLAN

A motivational sheet handed out to Arsenal players ahead of their game with Bolton has been leaked.

While managers like Jose Mourinho and Sam Allardyce famously overload their players with details of opposition players and ProZone stats, this document is a simple A4 sheet of just 224 words.

The document was apparently drafted by a sports psychologist and was designed to motivate a team that had already played two difficult away games in the space of a few days.

Emphasis is firmly placed on the 'team' and advices the players to 'stay grounded and humble as a player and a person'.

The full advice is as follows...

CONFIDENTIAL

Team meeting 19th September 2008-09-22:

The team:

* A team is as strong as the relationships within it. The driving force of a team is its member's ability to create and maintain excellent relationships within the team that can add an extra dimension and robustness to the team dynamic.

* This attitude can be used by our team to focus on the gratitude and the vitally important benefits that the team brings to our own lives. It can be used to strengthen and deepen the relationships with it and maximise the opportunities that await a strong and united team.

Our team becomes stronger by:

* Displaying a positive attitude on and off the pitch

* Everyone making the right decisions for the team

* Have an unshakeable belief that we can achieve our target

* Believe in the strength of the team

* Always want more - always give more

* Focus on our communication

* Be demanding with yourself

* Be fresh and well prepared to win

* Focus on being mentally stronger and always keep going until the end

* When we play away from home, believe in our identity and play the football we love to play at home

* Stick together

* Stay grounded and humble as a player and a person

* Show the desire to win in all that you do

* Enjoy and contribute to all that is special about being in a team - don't take it for granted

Football365: Wenger `STUNNED` by Platini attack

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits he is stunned by UEFA president Michel Platini's attack on him in an interview with a French newspaper.

Platini, the head of European football's governing body, fired a couple of broadsides at the Arsenal manager during a frank interview with Grenoble daily Dauphine Libere, which was published on Tuesday.

The former France international slammed Wenger for having a business mentality rather than a football one.

And he also tore into the Gunners boss for calling for the introduction of video replays to rule on questionable refereeing decisions.

Wenger has been taken aback by Platini's criticisms.

"I am stunned by the aggressive content of Platini's words," he told L'Equipe.

"I am effectively a supporter of video assistance for referees, like all coaches, and I believe UEFA have an important role to play in this.

"I am for sporting justice and UEFA must be the guarantor of it."

Wenger added: "I am a supporter of good management of clubs, for financial equilibrium.

"And UEFA must equally support this idea. I am fighting for the future of the game and of football.

"I don't see why UEFA should take umbrage at ideas that are different from theirs."

In Platini's interview with Dauphine Libere, Wenger's name was raised during a question about the introduction of video technology.

Platini replied: "I like to talk about football, him (Wenger) about business. We must stop with Wenger and all that."

Platini then said he hoped video assistance would never come into football, adding: "It would make me happy that Arsene Wenger never sees it."

Later in the interview, Platini again targeted Wenger when asked about his thoughts on Romanian side CFR Cluj's unexpected victory over Roma in the Champions League last week.

"That is what makes football so great," Platini said. "It is what people like Wenger do not want, little clubs beating the big clubs, because they want their business."

Arsene Wenger Interview before the Newcastle Game 29 August 2008

Why is Nike a superior sports brand?

We often wonder what makes us want to buy products?

Historically speaking, Need sprouts Demand but in the 21st Century Need is Created. We buy sports wear based on loyalty to our team and not to the quality or the brand as much.

For instance, if I am a fan of Theirry Henry I will buy his products and if he endorses Nike then I am left with no option but to buy Nike rather than pick Adidas a brand of my choice because of Run DMC, but then that choice of mine is also based on marketing.

Well cutting a long story short I believe that Nike is a huge success not only because it is endorsed by our favourite teams or players or even our nation but simply because Nike sets the standards extremely high and trust me no one can match them consistently.

I have visited Nike Town London on Oxford Circus and trust me there is no store like this one. Even if you cant afford anything you should still visit it. Its worth the visit.

If your abroad then simply have a look at the video. It displays their cutting edge technology and personalised service which sets such high standards that every customer will be satisfied.

Breaking News: Updated Robinho Transfer News English Premier League

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Brazil forward Robinho from Real Madrid for a British record fee of £32.4million.

The 24-year-old had been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer but City concluded a deal for the player shortly before the midnight transfer deadline.

The news comes on the day Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment began the process to take over at City, entering a period of due diligence.

Manager Mark Hughes told www.mcfc.co.uk: "I am absolutely delighted to get the opportunity to work with such an incredible talent like Robinho.

"I have said that in order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world."

Robinho's move to Eastlands will have stunned Chelsea, who remained confident of signing the Brazilian early in the evening.

Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari viewed his compatriot as key to fulfilling his brief of producing attacking football at Stamford Bridge.

But Real appeared unwilling to do business with Chelsea and criticised the manner of their pursuit the previous day.

The 24-year-old, capped 42 times, took the unusual step of calling a press conference on Sunday morning when he reiterated his desire to join the Blues.

Real blocked the move but Chelsea remained confident they would capture the former Santos marksman - until City's astonishing intervention late on Monday.

Bankrolled by Abu Dhabi United Group's takeover, City capped a remarkable transfer deadline day by offering £32.4million - with Real accepting.

City had earlier grabbed the headlines by attempting to hijack Dimitar Berbatov's transfer to Manchester United but when the Bulgarian opted for Old Trafford they moved instead for Robinho.

The Brazilian, who has signed a four-year deal, scored 25 goals in 101 games at the Bernabeu, during which time he won two Primera Liga winner's medals.

He moved to Spain three years ago after rising to prominence with Santos in his homeland. He has also scored 11 times for his country.

Hughes added: "I am really looking forward to introducing him to the rest of the squad, and to the City fans at the earliest opportunity. This is a real statement of intent as to the ambitions of Manchester City Football Club."

Breaking News: Mario Gomez and David Villa on the transfer list

Mario Gomez and David Villa
Manchester City adds 2 new names to their transfer list

Manchester City has placed bids to capture the signings of David Villa and Mario Gomez before the August transfer window deadline ends in less than six hours at midnight UK time.

“We have bids in for three players,” said Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, head of the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG). “There is Berbatov, but there is also David Villa and Mario Gomez. We have bids in for Villa and Gomez and I am waiting to hear whether we have been successful with those (offers).”

Man City has already had a bid accepted by Spurs for the signing of Dimitar Berbatov, but the Tottenham Hotspur striker has to decide whether he wants to play for Manchester City, stay at Spurs or wait to see if Manchester United can meet or beat City’s bid for the Bulgarian international.

Villa is one of the top strikers in Spain having scored 59 goals in 100 appearances for Valencia. He has 36 caps for Spain and has scored 18 goals for his nation.

Gomez, meanwhile, is currently at Stuttgart where the striker has scored 41 goals in 92 appearances for his club, and has scored 6 goals in 15 caps for Germany.

Without a doubt, this may turn out to be the maddest day in the history of Manchester City with the club being taken over by an Abu Dhabi group, having a bid accepted for Berbatov and putting in bids for two of the top strikers in Europe, David Villa and Mario Gomez.

Robinho set for Manchester City

Yes this is extremely shocking news but the English Premier League is witnessing history in the making. Firstly, Manchester City just got injected with huge amounts of money from Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment.

Secondly and I know it is the most shocking news that Robinho of Real Madrid has signed with Manchester City.... I cant believe it either but yes it is Manchester City. It were the players of Real Madrid that believed that Robinho is better than Ronaldo but yet I guess they met their match in the price tag for him.

£ 32.5 million is the price paid for Robinho

I am quite anxious to see how he performs. He has signed a 4 year contract with Manchester City. We wish him and Manchester City the best of luck in their future endeavours.

The English Premier League is beginning to get exciting now....

Football365: Updated Transfer Gossip for the English Premier League September 1 2008

SO, WILL THE PROMISED DEALS ACTUALLY HAPPEN?
And so the transfer window creaks shut, bringing to an end a summer of speculation, teasing, rumours and half-truths.

Of course we face the very real possibility that all five of the big sagas of the summer (Ronaldo to Real, Barry to Liverpool, Lampard to Inter, Berbatov to United and Robinho to Chelsea) will all end with the subjects exactly where they started.

Obviously the last two still have some legs in them, so let's see what the papers think.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Berbatov will get his move, with a fee of around £30million based on performances being put forward.

However, don't be surprised if today ends with young Frazier Campbell leaving ManYoo for Tottenham as part of the deal.

The word is that Spurs will only agree to sell the Bulgarian if they can recruit another striker in addition to Roman Pavlyuchenko. While Sir Alex Ferguson may be reluctant to offload another striker after dumping Louis Saha last week, he may consider Campbell expendable if it secures the long-anticipated signing of Berbatov.

In any case, Spurs are in for a very, very busy day. According to reports, they are looking to sign Lassana Diarra, Andrei Arshavin, Vedran Corluka and Real Zaragoza duo Sergio Garcia and Diego Milito.

ROBINHO DEAL OFF?
However, Fleet Street doesn't seem quite so confident of Robinho making his desired move to Chelsea.

After calling the gents of the Spanish press together to tell them he definitely wanted to leave Real (no s**t Rob) yesterday, Real themselves got their knickers in a twist, complaining about Chelsea's disgraceful conduct in the whole affair.

Pot, kettle etc, but the papers seem to think that their anger is sufficient to call of the deal.

All that is, except The Daily Express, who reckon Chelsea will make a 'final attempt' (well, it has to be) to broker a deal for the Brazilian party boy.

Man alive this could be a very interesting day.

PENNANT TO DECIDE BETWEEN MONEY AND A CAREER
The Daily Mail claim that Jermaine Pennant has been warned he will be left to rot in Liverpool's reserves unless he agrees to join Stoke.

The winger has yet to make a single appearance this season and, if he didn't quite appreciate that message, has reportedly been told by Benitez that he no longer has a future at Anfield.

Stoke are thought to be the only club to have bid for his services to date but Pennant has stalled the deal by demanding £50,000-a-week wages.

BUSY DAY FOR TOON
Kevin Keegan said on Saturday that he wanted 'two or three' players in before the clock strikes twelve, and the papers seem to have a list from which Keggy can pick.

Newcastle have already agreed a deal to sign striker Xisco from Deportivo la Coruna (more on that here), while they've been linked with ne or two more strikers.

The Daily Star reckons they have launched a bid for Emile Heskey from Wigan (although that apparently hinges on the Latics signing Mido), while a few papers reckon while they're at the JJB they'll ask about Olivier Kapo, despite him only joining in July.

Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph reckons they will put in a late bid of around £8million for Florent Malouda, and they look like wrapping up a loan deal for Argentinian midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez from Valencia.

On his way out could well be Alan Smith, who The Daily Telegraph claims will join Everton in a deal worth around £3million.

Phew.

QUIET DAY AT THE EMIRATES?
And what of Arsenal?

Well the bad news for you Gooners is that there is very little tittle and even less tattle around this morning, so it could be a very quiet day for Arsene Wenger, especially when you take in to account he apparently thought the window closed at noon, rather than midnight.

The only crumb of Gossip doing the rounds is in The Daily Mirror, who claim they will make a last-ditch bid to sign Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler.

However, that looks to be absolute balls, as the man himself signed a brand new contract in Italy only yesterday.

Still, Arsene does occasionally pull unexpected ones out of the bag, so keep your eyes open chaps.

WHO'S IN AT GOODISON?
So plenty was promised by David Moyes, but what will actually happen at Everton.

Louis Saha should complete his free move, while you'll already have read that Alan Smith is on his way.

The Daily Mail is still clinging on to the faint hope that the Joao Moutinho deal will finally happen, but that seems to just about be it.
